Shopify Magic vs AI Ad Apps: What Shopify's Free AI Can and Can't Do for Your Ads

Shopify Magic can remove backgrounds and generate scenes for free. Here is exactly what it does, where it stops for advertising, and when a dedicated AI ad app is worth paying for.

October 8, 2026·6 min read

Shopify Magic is Shopify's free, built-in AI. For images, it can remove a product photo's background, replace it with a solid color, or generate a new AI background from a prompt, one image at a time inside the product media editor. It does not make ad layouts, shot packs, carousels or batch runs, and it does not publish ads. Use it for quick listing edits, and use an AI ad app when you need finished ads at volume.

This guide shows what Shopify Magic does well, the point where merchants outgrow it for advertising, and a simple rule for deciding whether a paid app is worth it.

What Shopify Magic does with images

Shopify Magic is the umbrella name for the free AI features across the Shopify admin. Sidekick is the chat assistant that sits on top of them. For product media, Shopify added Magic to the media editor with three core actions:

  1. Remove background. Cuts the product out of its original background.
  2. Replace with a color. Puts the cutout on a solid color.
  3. Generate a background. Places the product in an AI-generated scene from a short prompt or a preset.

All three are included in every Shopify plan at no extra cost, and the edited image saves straight back to the product. For a merchant with a dozen products and some dull photos, that is genuinely useful.

Where Shopify Magic stops for advertising

A product page image and an ad do different jobs. The product page answers "what exactly am I buying?" The ad has to answer "why should I stop scrolling?" Shopify Magic is built for the first job.

What you need for ads Shopify Magic Dedicated AI ad app
Background removal and replacement Yes Yes
AI scene behind the product Yes, one image at a time Yes, several directions per product
Ad layouts with a hook, offer or benefit No Yes
Feed (4:5) and story (9:16) versions of the same ad Manual crop Generated per placement
Multi-angle shot packs (on-model, detail, in-use) No Yes, in apps with shot packs
Carousels No Yes, in apps with a carousel studio
Batch runs across many products No Yes
Brand voice and product context reused across creatives No Yes
Publish to Instagram, Facebook or Meta ads No In ad-focused apps

The gap is not image quality. It is everything between "nice product image" and "ad that is running".

The hidden cost: hand-offs

With Shopify Magic, a typical ad workflow looks like this:

  1. Edit the image in Shopify.
  2. Download it.
  3. Open a design tool to add a hook, a price or a badge.
  4. Export a 4:5 version and a 9:16 version.
  5. Upload both to Meta Ads Manager.
  6. Write the primary text and headline.
  7. Repeat for every product and every refresh.

That is roughly six hand-offs per creative. Ads need fresh creative every few weeks because of creative fatigue, so the hand-offs are where the plan falls apart. Most merchants refresh far less often than they mean to, simply because each refresh takes an afternoon.

A catalog-connected ad app removes most of those steps. With Brands OnPromptAds, for example, the product is already synced from Shopify, the ad is generated at the right sizes, the finished image can be pushed back to the listing, and the creative can go to Instagram, Facebook or Meta ads from the same workspace.

When Shopify Magic is enough

Stay with the free tool when most of these are true:

  • You have fewer than about 20 active products.
  • You mainly need better product-page images, not ads.
  • You are not running paid social yet, or you run one or two evergreen ads.
  • You are comfortable doing layouts in a design tool now and then.

In that situation, a paid app is a nice-to-have. Spend the money on ad budget instead.

When a dedicated AI ad app pays for itself

Upgrade when any of these are true:

  • You run Meta ads every week. You need three to five fresh creatives per product per month to stay ahead of fatigue.
  • You have more than 20 products to promote. One-at-a-time editing stops being realistic.
  • You need consistent shot packs. Apparel, jewelry, footwear and beauty buyers expect on-model, detail and in-use shots, not one hero image. See the Shopify AI product photography guide.
  • You are launching or running a sale. Black Friday, launches and seasonal drops need many variants fast. Our BFCM 2026 creative checklist shows the volume involved.

A simple test: if you spend more than two hours a month moving images between Shopify, a design tool and Ads Manager, a $29 app is cheaper than your time.

Can you use both?

Yes, and many merchants should. A sensible split:

  • Shopify Magic for quick fixes to existing listing photos: a cleaner background, a color swap, a cutout.
  • An AI ad app for anything that will be advertised: ad creatives, shot packs, carousels and seasonal variants. Push the best scene images back to the product as additional images.

The two do not conflict. Both write to the same product media in Shopify.

How to check quality, whichever tool you use

Run the same three products through each tool and compare:

  1. A product with small text, such as a bottle label or a printed tag. Does the text survive?
  2. A reflective or transparent product, such as jewelry, glass or a watch face. Do the reflections make sense in the new scene?
  3. A product where scale matters, such as furniture or a bag. Does it look the right size?

If a tool fails these, it will fail more quietly on the rest of your catalog.

Frequently asked questions

Is Shopify Magic free?

Yes. Shopify Magic and the Sidekick assistant are included in Shopify plans at no extra charge. You do not need to install an app to use the media editor's background tools.

Can Shopify Magic make Facebook ads?

Not directly. Shopify Magic edits product images and writes text such as product descriptions. It does not produce ad layouts in feed and story sizes or publish to Meta. You would export the edited image and finish the ad in another tool or in Ads Manager.

Does Shopify Magic generate lifestyle images?

It can generate an AI background behind a product, which works as a simple lifestyle scene. It works one image at a time and does not produce multi-shot packs such as on-model, detail and in-use views.

Will editing with Shopify Magic replace my original photo?

When you save an edit in the media editor, the edited version is saved to the product. Keep a copy of your original photography outside Shopify so you can always go back to the clean source.

What is the difference between Shopify Magic and Sidekick?

Shopify Magic is the set of AI features built into the admin, such as image editing and text generation. Sidekick is the conversational assistant you chat with in the admin, which can carry out tasks and use those features for you.

Which is better for a new store, Shopify Magic or a paid app?

For a brand-new store with a few products and no ad budget yet, start with Shopify Magic. When you start spending on ads every week, a paid AI ad app saves enough production time to pay for itself. Our first-sale playbook covers that stage.
