How to Get Your First Sale on Shopify With Ads (A $10-a-Day Playbook)
A step-by-step plan for new Shopify stores to get the first sale with a small Meta ads budget, covering which product to push, the store fixes to make first, the creatives to run and how to read the results.
To get your first Shopify sale with ads, pick one product, fix the trust gaps on its product page, connect Shopify to Meta so purchases are tracked, and run three to five different creatives for that product at about $10 a day for 7 to 14 days. Judge the ads on clicks and add-to-carts first, because a brand-new store rarely gets enough purchases in week one to judge on sales alone.
Most stores with no sales do not have a traffic problem or an ads problem. They have a focus problem: too many products, one generic ad, and a budget spread so thin that nothing gets a fair test. This playbook fixes that.
Step 1: Pick one hero product
Your first sale will almost certainly come from one product, so give one product the whole budget.
Choose the product that scores best on these four questions:
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Can a stranger understand it in one image? | Ads have about one second to explain the product |
| Is the price between roughly $25 and $80? | Low enough for an impulse buy, high enough to leave margin for ad costs |
| Does it solve an obvious problem or make an obvious gift? | Clear reasons to buy convert cold traffic |
| Do you have, or can you generate, good images of it? | Weak images are the most common reason first ads fail |
If two products tie, pick the one with the better margin. You will pay for some learning before the ads become efficient.
Step 2: Fix the product page before spending a dollar
Sending paid traffic to a page that does not earn trust wastes the budget. Before launching, check the hero product's page against this list:
- Four to eight images, including a clean main shot, a scale or in-use shot and a lifestyle scene. See our Shopify product image size guide.
- A benefit-led first line in the description, not a list of materials.
- Shipping time and cost visible near the Add to cart button.
- A clear returns policy, linked from the product page.
- Contact details and an About page that shows a real business.
- Mobile check. Open the page on your phone. Most ad traffic will be on a phone.
If the product has thin images, this is the cheapest place to use AI. One good source photo can become a full gallery and the ad creatives in the same session. The Shopify AI product photography guide explains how.
Step 3: Connect tracking properly
Install Meta's Facebook & Instagram sales channel in Shopify and connect your Meta Business account, ad account and pixel. This sends purchase events to Meta through both the browser pixel and the server-side Conversions API. Without it, Meta cannot see which ads produce sales, so it cannot optimize toward buyers. Our Pixel vs Conversions API guide explains why both matter.
Before launching, place a test order or use Meta's Events Manager test tools to confirm that ViewContent, AddToCart, InitiateCheckout and Purchase all fire.
Step 4: Make three to five genuinely different creatives
One ad is not a test. Five near-identical ads are not a test either. Make three to five creatives that each try a different reason to buy:
- Problem and solution. Show the problem the product solves, then the product.
- Lifestyle. The product in the life of the person who would buy it.
- Close-up quality. Texture, materials and craftsmanship, for premium products.
- Social proof. A review quote or "bestseller" framing, if you have real reviews.
- Offer. Free shipping, a bundle or a launch discount, if you can afford one.

Step 5: Launch one simple campaign
Keep the setup simple. Complexity splits a small budget into pieces too small to learn from.
| Setting | Recommendation for a first campaign |
|---|---|
| Objective | Sales, optimizing for purchases (or add-to-cart if purchases are very rare) |
| Campaign structure | One campaign, one ad set, three to five ads |
| Budget | About $10 a day, more if you can afford it |
| Audience | Broad: your country, an age range that fits the product, no detailed interests |
| Placements | Advantage+ placements |
| Duration | 7 to 14 days before major changes |
Broad targeting works for new stores because Meta's delivery system finds buyers from the creative and the purchase signals better than hand-picked interests usually can. Your creative is now your targeting.
Step 6: Read the results in the right order
With $70 to $140 of spend, you may get zero, one or a handful of purchases. That is not enough data to judge on sales alone. Read the funnel from the top:
| Signal | Rough healthy sign | If it is weak |
|---|---|---|
| Click-through rate (link) | Around 1 percent or higher | The creative is not stopping the scroll. Test new angles |
| Cost per click | In line with your category, often under $1.50 | Same as above, or the audience is too narrow |
| Add-to-cart rate from clicks | A few percent or more | The product page, price or shipping is losing people |
| Checkout started vs completed | Most who start should finish | Shipping costs or checkout surprises |
| Purchases | Your first sale | Keep the winning creative running and make variants of it |
These are rough guides, not benchmarks. Categories vary a lot. The point is to find which step leaks. If people click but do not add to cart, a new ad will not fix it: the product page will.

Step 7: After the first sale
The first sale proves the funnel works. Now make it repeatable:
- Turn off the bottom two creatives and make two new variants of the best one.
- Raise the budget gradually, by about 20 percent every few days, so delivery stays stable. Our guide to scaling from $10 to $100 a day covers this.
- Start retargeting product-page visitors who did not buy. See the ecommerce retargeting guide.
- Ask the first buyers for a review. Real reviews become your best ad creative.
The math behind $10 a day
Here is a worked example with assumed numbers, so you can plug in your own:
- Budget: $10 a day for 14 days = $140
- Assumed cost per click: $1.00, so about 140 visitors
- Assumed conversion rate for a new store: 1 to 2 percent
- Expected purchases: 1 to 3
The numbers are small. That is why the first goal is a sale and a clear read of where the funnel leaks, not a profitable campaign. Profitability comes from the second and third rounds of creative, once you know which angle works.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my Shopify store have visitors but no sales?
Usually the product page does not earn trust or answer key questions. Common causes are thin images, hidden shipping costs, no returns policy, a slow mobile page or a price that feels high without explanation. Check where visitors drop off: product page, cart or checkout.
How much should I spend on ads to get my first Shopify sale?
Plan for at least $70 to $150 over one to two weeks, about $5 to $10 a day. Less than that rarely gives Meta enough data to find buyers. Spend it on one product with several creatives rather than spreading it across the whole catalog.
Should I use Facebook ads or TikTok ads for a new Shopify store?
Meta (Facebook and Instagram) is the most forgiving starting point for most product stores because of its purchase optimization and Shopify integration. TikTok can work well for visual, impulse-buy products if you can produce native-feeling video. Start with one channel and learn it properly.
Do I need a designer to make ads for my Shopify store?
No. Many first-time sellers use AI ad apps to turn product photos into ad creatives. Brands OnPromptAds installs from the Shopify App Store, syncs your products and generates feed and story creatives from the images already on your listings.
How long does it take to get the first sale on Shopify?
With a focused product, a solid product page, working tracking and a few distinct creatives, many stores see a first sale within the first one to two weeks of ads. Without ads or another traffic source, it can take much longer.
Should I offer a discount for my first sale?
A launch offer, such as free shipping or a small first-order discount, can help a new store with no reviews. Make sure your margin can absorb it on top of ad costs. A bundle often protects margin better than a straight discount.
