Shopify Product Image Alt Text: How to Write It for SEO, Accessibility, and AI Shopping

A simple formula for Shopify product image alt text, with examples for every type of shot, the mistakes to avoid, and how to add alt text in Shopify, so images help shoppers, Google Images and AI assistants.

October 8, 2026·6 min read

Good Shopify product image alt text describes what the image shows in one short, specific sentence: the product, the variant and what is different about this particular shot. For example: "Sage linen shirt, front view, worn by a model with sleeves rolled up." Write it for someone who cannot see the image. That same description helps Google Images and AI shopping assistants understand the product.

Below is the formula, examples for every common shot, the mistakes that waste alt text, and how to add it in Shopify.

What alt text does on a Shopify store

Alt text is the text alternative attached to each image. It does three jobs:

  1. Accessibility. Screen readers read it aloud to shoppers who are blind or have low vision. For them, the alt text is the product photo.
  2. Image search. Google uses alt text, together with the page content and file name, to understand images. Its image SEO guidance asks for useful, descriptive alt text and warns against keyword stuffing.
  3. AI understanding. AI assistants and shopping agents read page text, including alt text, to understand products. Descriptive alt text adds details the title does not cover, such as fit, setting and scale. See getting Shopify products recommended by AI search.

The formula

[Product name + variant] + [what this shot shows] + [useful context]

  • Product name and variant: "Sage linen shirt"
  • What this shot shows: "back view", "close-up of the coconut buttons", "worn by a model"
  • Useful context: "with sleeves rolled up", "next to a coffee mug for scale", "on a white background"

Keep it to one sentence. A common accessibility guideline is to stay around 125 characters, because some screen readers handle long alt text awkwardly. Shopify does not require a length, so aim for short and specific.

Examples for every type of product shot

Shot type Weak alt text Good alt text
Main packshot "shirt" "Sage linen shirt, front view, on a white background"
Back view "shirt back" "Sage linen shirt, back view showing the box pleat"
On model "model wearing shirt" "Sage linen shirt worn untucked by a model, size M, sleeves rolled"
Detail "detail" "Close-up of coconut shell buttons on the sage linen shirt"
Scale "ring in hand" "Gold signet ring on a hand, showing its size against the finger"
Lifestyle "lifestyle image" "Ceramic pour-over coffee set on a wooden kitchen counter in morning light"
Variant "blue" "Stoneware mug in navy glaze, side view with handle on the right"
In use "serum" "Vitamin C serum dropper applying one drop to the back of a hand"
What is included "box" "Candle gift set: three jars, wick trimmer and gift box laid out flat"

Notice that every good example would still make sense if read aloud with no image. That is the test.

Mistakes that waste alt text

  • Leaving it blank. Screen readers may read out the file name instead, such as "IMG 4821 jpg".
  • Keyword stuffing. "Linen shirt mens linen shirt best linen shirt cheap linen shirt" helps no one, and Google explicitly advises against it.
  • Repeating the title on every image. If all eight images say "Sage linen shirt", a screen reader user hears the same words eight times and learns nothing about the differences.
  • Starting with "Image of" or "Picture of". Screen readers already announce that it is an image.
  • Describing the photo style instead of the product. "Beautiful aesthetic shot" says nothing useful.
  • Inaccurate details. If the alt text says "navy" but the image is black, it misleads people and machines alike.

How to add alt text in Shopify

For a single image

  1. In your Shopify admin, open Products and select the product.
  2. Click the image in the Media section.
  3. Select Add alt text (or edit the existing alt text).
  4. Type the description and save.

For many images

Editing hundreds of images one by one is slow. Options:

  • Prioritize your top 20 products by traffic first, since that is where most shoppers and searchers land.
  • Use an app that edits alt text in bulk.
  • Write alt text when the image is created. When you push images to Shopify from Brands OnPromptAds, you edit the alt text for each image before it lands on the listing, so new images never arrive blank.

Turn your Shopify product photos into ads

Brands OnPromptAds syncs your Shopify catalog, generates ad creatives from the product photos you already have, and pushes the finished images back to your product listings. Plans from $29 a month, billed through Shopify, with a 14-day free trial.

Alt text for AI-generated product images

Generated lifestyle scenes, on-model shots and detail images need alt text like any other image, with two extra points:

  • Describe what the image shows, not how it was made. "Ceramic vase on a sunlit windowsill with olive branches" is right. "AI image of vase" is not useful alt text. If you need to disclose generation, do it in metadata and policies, not in alt text. See our Google Shopping image rules for the metadata Google expects.
  • Only describe what is accurate about the product. If a generated scene adds props, describe the product truthfully and treat the props as context.

File names help too

Before uploading, rename image files to describe them: sage-linen-shirt-back-view.jpg instead of IMG_4821.jpg. File names are a small signal for image search, and they keep your Shopify media library searchable. Our Shopify product image size guide covers formats and dimensions.

Frequently asked questions

Does alt text help Shopify SEO?

Yes. Google uses alt text, together with the page content and file name, to understand images, which helps them appear in Google Images. It also improves accessibility, which matters for every shopper and is a legal expectation in many markets.

How long should Shopify alt text be?

One clear sentence, ideally around 125 characters or fewer. Long enough to describe what the image shows and what is different about it, short enough for a screen reader user to take in quickly.

Should every product image have different alt text?

Yes. Each image shows something different, such as an angle, a detail, the product in use or a variant, and the alt text should say what. Identical alt text on every image wastes the opportunity and frustrates screen reader users.

Should I put keywords in alt text?

Use the words a shopper would naturally use to describe the product, such as "linen shirt" or "gold signet ring", because they are accurate descriptions. Do not repeat keywords or list search terms. Google warns that keyword stuffing in alt attributes is a poor practice.

Do decorative images need alt text?

Purely decorative images, such as background patterns or divider graphics in a theme, can have empty alt text so screen readers skip them. Product images are never decorative: they always need a description.

Can I add alt text in bulk in Shopify?

The Shopify admin edits alt text one image at a time, so many merchants use a bulk-editing app or fix their top products first. The easiest long-term fix is to write alt text when images are created, which apps such as Brands OnPromptAds let you do before pushing images to Shopify.
