Google Shopping Image Rules for Shopify Stores: Where AI and Lifestyle Images Are Allowed
Which Shopify product images Google Shopping uses, the rules your main image must follow, where AI-generated and lifestyle images are allowed, the AI metadata requirement, and how to fix image disapprovals.
Google Shopping takes your Shopify product's first (featured) image as the main image, and that image must show the exact product clearly, with no text, prices, badges, watermarks or borders. Your other product images become additional images, where lifestyle scenes and products in use are allowed. AI-generated images are allowed in both places if they represent the product accurately and keep the metadata that marks them as AI-generated.
Getting this wrong is expensive: a disapproved main image removes the product from Shopping ads and free listings until it is fixed. Here is how the rules map onto a Shopify store.
How Shopify images reach Google Shopping
When you connect Shopify to Google Merchant Center through the Google & YouTube channel, each product's images are sent in the feed:
| Shopify | Google Merchant Center attribute | What Google uses it for |
|---|---|---|
| Featured (first) product image | image_link |
The main image in Shopping ads and free listings |
| Other product images | additional_image_link (up to 10) |
Extra gallery images, and alternatives Google can test |
| Variant image | image_link for that variant |
The main image for that specific color or size |
That means the order of images in Shopify matters. Whatever you drag into first position becomes the image Google judges against the strictest rules.
Rules for the main image
Google's image requirements for image_link boil down to this:
- Show the exact item being sold. Not a similar item, an illustration or a placeholder.
- Fill the frame sensibly. Google's guidance is for the product to take up no less than 75 percent and no more than 90 percent of the image.
- No promotional overlays. No "SALE", prices, discount badges, calls to action, "free shipping" or promotional adjectives on the image.
- No watermarks, logos added on top, or borders.
- Size. At least 500 × 500 pixels, with 1500 × 1500 or larger recommended. Files must be under 16 MB and 64 megapixels.
- Formats. JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP or TIFF.
A clean packshot on white or a light neutral background meets all of these. If you follow our Shopify product image size guide with 2048 × 2048 square images, you clear the size rules with room to spare.
Rules for additional and lifestyle images
Google's additional image link spec is more relaxed. Additional images can include product staging and show the product in use. That is where these belong:
- On-model and in-hand shots
- Lifestyle scenes in a room, outdoors or at a table
- Detail and texture close-ups
- Scale shots
- AI-generated scenes that accurately show the product
Additional images still have to meet the technical standards and must represent the real product. Treat "lifestyle allowed" as "context allowed", not "anything goes".

AI-generated product images: what Google requires
Google allows AI-generated product images, with one requirement many merchants miss. Google asks merchants to preserve the metadata that marks an image as AI-generated, specifically the IPTC DigitalSourceType value trainedAlgorithmicMedia. This applies to the main image, additional images and lifestyle images.
In practice:
- Ask your AI tool whether it embeds the IPTC tag. Some tools write it automatically and some do not.
- Do not strip metadata. Some compression tools, background removers and "optimize images" plugins remove embedded metadata. Check your pipeline end to end.
- Keep the product accurate. Metadata does not excuse a misleading image. The product's color, shape, labels and features must match what ships.
Beyond Google, accuracy is the rule that protects you everywhere: Meta ads, marketplaces and your returns rate all punish images that oversell the product.
The safest image strategy for a Shopify store
| Position in Shopify | What to put there | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1st (featured) | Clean, accurate packshot, no text | Becomes Google's main image. Strictest rules |
| 2nd to 4th | Alternate angles and detail | Answers buyer questions on the product page |
| 5th to 8th | Scale, on-model and lifestyle scenes, including accurate AI scenes | Allowed as additional images. Helps conversion |
| Variant images | One clean image per color or size | Becomes the main image for that variant in Google |
| Ads only, never on the listing | Sale banners, prices, countdowns | Promotional overlays get main images disapproved |
When you push AI-generated images to Shopify with an app such as Brands OnPromptAds, choose append rather than replace for lifestyle scenes, so they land after the clean main image instead of on top of it.
How to fix common image disapprovals
"Promotional overlay on image"
Google detected text or graphics on the main image. Remove sale text, badges and logos from the first Shopify image and re-sync. If the overlay is part of the original photo, generate or shoot a clean version and move it into first position.
"Generic image" or "image too small"
The main image is a placeholder, a stock photo or under the size minimum. Upload a real product photo at 1500 × 1500 or larger.
"Image cropped" or "product too small"
The product is cut off or occupies too little of the frame. Re-frame so the product fills roughly 75 to 90 percent.
"Watermark" or "border"
Remove the watermark or frame. If your supplier's photos carry a watermark, you need clean originals, and you need the right to use them. Our dropshipping ads guide covers supplier photos.
Variant image problems
Each variant needs its own correct image. If "Red" shows the blue product, Google may flag a mismatch and shoppers will bounce. Assign the right image to each variant in Shopify.
After fixing, Merchant Center usually re-reviews images within a few days of the next feed update.
Seasonal sales without breaking the rules
During sales such as Black Friday, merchants are tempted to add "40% OFF" to product images. Keep the sale on the storefront and in ads instead:
- Use your theme's sale badge, which is page code, not part of the image.
- Use Google Merchant Center promotions and sale price attributes to show discounts in Shopping ads.
- Put sale messaging in Meta and display ad creatives, which have different rules.

Frequently asked questions
Which Shopify image does Google Shopping use?
Google Shopping uses the featured image, the first image on the Shopify product, as the main image. Variant images become the main image for those variants. Other product images are sent as additional images.
Can I use AI-generated images in Google Shopping?
Yes, as long as they accurately show the product you sell and keep the metadata that identifies them as AI-generated. Google asks merchants to preserve the IPTC DigitalSourceType tag trainedAlgorithmicMedia on AI-generated images.
Are lifestyle images allowed in Google Merchant Center?
Yes, as additional images. Google's additional image guidance allows product staging and products shown in use. Keep the main image a clear photo of the product itself.
Why was my product disapproved for a promotional overlay?
The main image contains text or graphics such as "sale", a price, a discount badge or a logo added on top. Remove the overlay from the first image in Shopify, or move a clean image into first position, then wait for the feed to re-sync.
What size should images be for Google Shopping?
At least 500 × 500 pixels, and Google recommends 1500 × 1500 or larger. Files must be under 16 MB. A 2048 × 2048 Shopify product image meets every requirement.
Can I put my logo on product images for Google Shopping?
Not on the main image. Logos and watermarks added on top of the image are not allowed there. A logo that is physically on the product, such as a printed brand name, is fine.
